Rare c.1790 George Washington Curtain Tieback.
Rare Circa 1790 George Washington Curtain Tieback Or Drawer Pull. Enamel portrait set into brass. Highly recognizable line-drawn image in military uniform, with name above. This item belongs to a broad family of enameled boxes, brooches, tiebacks, etc., often referred to as Battersea enamels. Made in England, they pictured a wide variety of subjects, only a tiny fraction of which included Washington or other American subjects. While manufactured in England, they were clearly intended for the American market. While all Washington tiebacks are desirable and valuable, there are several fairly "standard" portraits that are available on the market not infrequently. However, this is a most unusual image, and it is in beautiful condition, completely free of the hairline cracks which afflict many of these. Diameter of the enameled surface is 1.5", overall length 3.25".
