Rare ax Code Feinmechansiche Werke K98 Bolt Action Rifle
This is a rare "ax" code k98 rifle manufactured by Feinmechanische Werke, G.m.b.H., Erfurt, Altonaerstr. in 1940. In mid 1940 the "27" code of Erma was replaced by the "ax" code of Feinmechansiche Werke. It is estimated that approximately 150,000 K98 rifles were produced in 1940 with both the "27/ax" code receiver markings, however the "ax" code k98 rifles are much rarer. The top of the receiver ring is marked "ax / 1940", the right side is marked with three "eagle/280" Waffenamt proofs and the left side is marked with the Nazi firing proof and the serial number. The left rear of the barrel is also marked with the Nazi firing proof and the serial number with three "eagle/280" proofs and "*". The left side receiver wall is marked "Mod. 98". The rifle has all milled parts, most are proof and the visible serial numbers match. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 meters. Mounted with a one piece laminated pistol grip stock numbered to the gun with a flat buttplate, proofs stamped in the grip area, and the stick army wing eagle/H proof over two Waffenamt 280 proofs on the right side of the buttstock. Complete with a leather sling.
