Rare and elaborate double-cased consecutive pair of Sharps patent pepperbox derringers by Tipping & Lawden with fancy floral gutta-percha grips. Serial numbers “1017” and “1018”. The Type 1 pistols are in .22 caliber, and show elaborate English scroll-engraving and typical thumb panel on each side of barrel. Pistol “1018” shows 10 – 20% original blue, evenly drifting and toning to a light patina with some erosion and pin-prick pitting just starting. The frame shows 20 – 30% original silver with the balance drifted to a natural brass patina. The grips show some slight wear to the high points from being carried. The action good, and good overall. Pistol “1017” shows approximately 80 to 90% original nickel plate on barrel with some peeling and areas where nickel is lost have gone to a darkish grey color, with some erosion and pitting starting in these areas. The balance of nickel is very bright. Frame shows 10 – 20% original nickel which has drifted and balance has gone to patina. The hammer and trigger show considerable original nickel also. The grips are somewhat worn from carry and are generally good with a couple of chips. The case is lined in a light burgundy velveteen in good condition with some fading, fraying, and indentations at contact points. The exterior of the case is veneered rosewood and in good to very good condition with some slight cracks and scratches, slight warping, and just normal age. It is interesting that the owner obviously carried this pair on his person and used them. This is the only original double-cased pair of consecutive Tipping & Lawden Sharps patent derringers known to this cataloger. Tom Seymour Collection. Est.: $5,000 - $10,000.
