Rare and desirable Ames rifleman’s knife dated 1849. One of approx. 1,000 made, showing full markings and original scabbard. Overall approx. 18”, the blade is 12”. The ricasso is marked “Ames Mfg. Co” and “Cabotville” above “1849” above the ricasso. On the back of the ricasso is marked “US” and the inspectors initials “WD”. The cast brass crossguard with integral ferrule is also inspector stamped with the initials “WD” and “JWR”. The blade is in excellent condition with sharpening marks, good edge, and the blade is slightly tipped. Just some slight discolorations and normal aging. Grip shows excellent condition, and is a walnut with semi birds head hilt and brass lanyard loop in the pommel. Three iron pins secure the hilt. The knife is owner-inscribed with date “1886” initials “CR” and the word “Merced”, with diamond decorations around the pins. The original scabbard remains in very good to near excellent condition with just some slight crazing, with slight patina. The knife and scabbard are completely authentic to the period.
