This Lakenan Pottery Pig Flask features an Albany glaze with a mica tint incised at the top is the date "1875" and on the side of the pig "Black's Eye (graphic of an eye) Opener in a hogs value"/H & St. Joes RR/ Railroad track incised from the snout of the pig to the rear with the town of Cameron near the back hind leg, the city of St. Jo near the rear of the pig and the City of Kansas City near the testicles of the pig. The underbelly of the pig is incrised with the "Cincinnati the City of Port". The left side of the pig is incised with Yours Truly/ Lakenan Pottery. It is obvious that Lakenan Pottery inspiration for this piece was the well know and desired pig flasks from Anna Pottery in Anna, Illinois. Lakenan is located approximately 275 miles northwest of Anna, Illinois. Plans for the first railroad to run east to west across the state of Missouri were made in the office of John M. Clemens, father of Samuel (Mark Twain) Clemens, in the spring of 1846, in Hannibal, Missouri. Attorney R. F. Lakenan drew up the charter, "An Act to Incorporate the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad Company", which was passed by the Legislature in February, 1847. Hannibal was to be the eastern terminal of the railroad which would run through the county seats of Palmyra, Shelbyville, Bloomington, Linneus, Chillicothe, and Gallatin, then on to St. Joseph. At the time, there was no fast way to travel or transport goods to the western border of the state where much of the pioneer traffic embarked for the northwest. This extremely unique and rare Pig Flask memorialized all of the aforementioned history and expansion of the railroads.
