Rare and Magnificent Factory Engraved Colt Officers Model Double Action Target Revolver with Fabulous Gold Initial Inlaid Mother of Pearl Grips

This is a spectacular example of a very early Colt Officers Model DA Target revolver that was manufactured in late 1909 which has been beautifully engraved in a Cuno Helfricht pattern and fitted with a set of Mother of Pearl Grips with large Gold initial inlayed in the right grip. If you could afford to own one of these early Colt Officers Model target revolvers that was a true mark of superior marksman and to have one that was factory engraved was usually only reserved for the very rich and/or elite top shooters in the shooting fraternity. These were beautifully manufactured revolvers that were hand built to exacting accuracy requirements and were the best target pistol at this time. They had flat top target type frames, adjustable front and rear sights, checkered trigger and back strap with a super smooth, hand honed, double and single action trigger pull. This exceptional pistol has also been beautifully engraved in a magnificent Cuno Helfricht pattern that covers over 75% (C coverage) of the metal surfaces. The Helfricht family was actively engraving from approximately 1870-1920, with this example falling right in the middle of those dates. The pattern consists of a beautiful laid out scroll engraving intermixed with several geometric patterns. The scroll engraving has a heavy punch-dot background covering the flats of the frame, sides of the barrel with an alternating pattern on the flutes of the cylinder, with geometric engraving on the borders, around some of the factory markings, sides of the top strap, front edges of the frame and cylinder crane and radiuses on both sides of the hammer. The grips as noted are Mother of Pearl and have the gold wire inlayed intertwined "JJR" initials on the right side. Even the top flats of the initials have been embellished with a punch-dot surface on the "R" and a cross-hatched pattern on the "JJ to give them a contrasting appearance. The metal surfaces have the original Colt high polish blue finish with the Colt niter blue on the trigger, rear sight, frame screw heads, and top surfaces of the hammer. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length, blur finish, factory engraving, pearl grips with "JJR" inlaid in gold on the right panel and that it was shipped as 1 to Morrell Hardware (no address available) on April 15, 1910. A wonderful example of a Master level gun engraver from the 1910 era.

Excellent with 95% plus of the original high polish blue finish overall with minor wear on the edges and high spots sides of the muzzle, with browning and spotting on the front grip strap. The grips are excellent with no visible chipping or cracking, which is rare as these are very fragile grips. The gold wire inlayed initials are still tight in the grips. The engraving is just superb, beautifully laid out and executed with no over runs or corrections. A fantastic example of a Factory Engraved Colt Officer's Model DA Target Revolver.
