Rare and Highly Desirable Joslyn Model 1855 "Monkey Tail" Carbine with Tin Plated Finish

This carbine was one of approximately 1,500 manufactured by A. H. Waters of Milbury, Massachusetts in 1855 and 1856. These Joslyn carbines were mostly issued on a limited basis to several Federal volunteer cavalry regiments early in the Civil War (The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Ohio Cavalry were each issued 100 of these as well as the 6th, which were issued 250). The lock is unmarked and the top of the breech lever is marked "PATD BY/B.F. JOSLYN./AUG. 23, 1855". The right side of the breech lever is marked with the serial number "629". There are no visible ordnance proof or inspection marks and the top of the stock opposite the hammer is stamped with a museum or collection inventory number "1400". The other most notable feature on this scarce carbine is the unique tin plated finish. Writer has seen other types of martial arms with this finish that were reportedly made for the U.S. Navy. This finish was more durable to the harsh elements of the salt water and would be one of the explanations for this to have been applied. (The other possibility could be that it was a presentation piece, which would explain the absence of a cartouche; you be the judge). Features also include a pinched front sight and a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The single brass barrel band, trigger guard and buttplate are mounted with an oil finish walnut stock, fitted with a saddle ring bar with ring on the left flat. Of the 1,500 manufactured, 1,200 are known to have been sold to the U.S., leaving only 300 for public sale.

Very fine. The carbine retains 70% plus of the untouched original plating. The trigger guard and tang have a frosted appearance. A small area of brass is exposed on the buttplate and shows a finely aged patina. The stock is very good with some scattered minor chips, dents and dings. The breech lever marking is clear and crisp. Mechanically fine.
