Rare and Extraordinary The Finest Blued Remington Zigzag Derringer

Also known as the "Zigzag Pepperbox", Remington manufactured only about 1,000 of these derringers in 1861 and 1862. The left side of the frame is marked "ELLIOTS PATENT/AUG. 17, 1858/MAY 29, 1860" and the right side is marked "MANUFACTURED BY/REMINGTONS/ILION, N.Y." The serial number is marked under the left grip panel on the frame. The derringer has a six round revolving barrel cluster with a brass pin front sight mounted on each rib. There is a notch in the rear of the frame which serves as the rear sight. Ring trigger which is moved forward and then pulled rearward to rotate the barrels, cock and fire. The barrels are blue and the frame silver plated. Fitted with smooth two-piece hard rubber grips. This was Remington's first handgun designed for the metallic cartridge.

Excellent. The barrels retain 95% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The rear and butt of the frame are a smooth dark untouched "black" toned silver. The left side of the frame retains 98% of the original silver plating, the right side shows 95% plus with the balance having a smooth dark patina. The grips are excellent with a few minor dings and handling marks. The markings are clear. The mechanics are excellent. Writer cannot recall seeing a finer example!
