This is a truly unique Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine with three special order features. This carbine was produced in 1915 and has a blue finish with color casehardened hammer and lever. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut. The unique special order features on this carbine are: 1) The 92 Saddle Ring Carbine is chambered in the "44 W.C. F." cartridge and it has a "smooth bore" barrel. The actual bore diameter measures .420, so that indicates the barrel was never rifled by the factory, validating the authenticity of this barrel. 2) it has a half length or button magazine and 3) it is fitted with a very rare short yardage "Winchester Express" rear sight. This sight is rarely encountered and is calibrated for 50, 100 and 200 yards, with each sight leaf having a small "Platinum" sighting line. The left side of the receiver is fitted with a factory saddle ring and staple. The stock as noted is a beautiful straight grained walnut, that has been fitted with an original Winchester hard rubber, flat shotgun style buttplate. The top left side of the barrel between the lower barrel band and the rear sight is roll-stamped in two-lines "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884.", with the caliber designation "44 W.C.F." directly in front of the receiver. The rear of the barrel and top of the receiver are both stamped with the oval Winchester "W/P" proofmarks. The serial number, "779047" is stamped on the underside of the receiver, just behind the forearm. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEL 1892/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. No records are available to writer at time of description, but the gun is undoubtedly original!
