Rare and Desirable U.S. Army Contract Lindsay Two Shot Model 1863 Rifle Musket

Developed in the early 1860's, the United States Government placed an order for 1,000 Lindsay rifles, with no follow-ups; the design represented a notable increase in firepower over a standard rifle-musket of the day, but the dual hammer and non-selective single trigger action occasionally double-discharged, among other issues, resulting in the design being passed up. Combat usage, combined with the aforementioned mechanical failures, has left a limited number of survivors. Blade front and 3-leaf rear sights, with the top flat of the superposed chamber marked "LINDSAY/PATENT'D. OCT. 9. 1860" and the upper tang just behind the dual hammers stamped "KK". Smooth straight wrist stock, with a tulip-head ramrod, 3 barrel bands, sling swivels, a pair of oval "A.D.K." cartouches on the left stock flat and a smooth buttplate with "US" stamped on the heel.

Very fine, with a few small areas of brown and mild handling marks on the arsenal bright exterior. The stock is very good, with crisp cartouches, a few dings and scuffs. Mechanically excellent. A prime example of a scarce Civil War Union rifle-musket.
