Rare World War I Remington-UMC Factory Cutaway Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is a very rare and certainly very unique Remington-UMC factory cutaway pistol. An example of an original Remington-UMC pistol should be considered fairly rare as only 21,676 total were actually manufactured. However in this configuration, as a cutaway it is probably one of only a handful ever manufactured for training or demonstrator purposes. These rare pistols were manufactured in late 1918/19 by the Remington Arms-U.M.C. Co., in Bridgeport, Connecticut using their own drawings that did not conform to the TDP as used by Colt or the U.S. Government, consequently most of these pistols were disposed of after WWI. This rare example has been cutaway in three areas on the right side of the pistol. The center section of the slide and frame which shows the mating/interface surfaces of the barrel lug, barrel link and the importance of the slide stop/release lever/cross pin. The second area is over the rear end of the barrel which shows the interface of the locking lugs of the barrel and slide. The third area is on the rear of the frame/slide which clearly shows the critical interface of several parts, that includes the sear and disconnector with the hammer and the interface of the sear spring and grip safety with all of those parts. The slide retains the three line, two block factory markings of "PATENTED DEC.19.1905/FEB.14.1911.AUG.19.1913./COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO." followed by "MANUFACTURED BY/REMINGTON ARMS UMC CO. INC./BRIDGEPORT. CONN.U.S.A.", with the with the circled "REMINGTON/UMC" logo between the two blocks. The right side has the partial markings of "MODEL OF 1911/U.S. ARMY CALIBER .45". The frame is correctly not marked with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY", nor does it have any U.S. Government final inspector's initials, clearly indicating this was done as a factory cutaway and not and Ordnance cutaway. The frame is also not serial numbered and the entire pistol is still in the white factory finish except for some of the small parts being blue, which gives a nice contrasting finish. The top of the chamber area is stamped with a single "P" proofmark. The rear of the slide above the firing pin stop is stamped with a single letter "E" provisional inspection mark. The scarce pistol is complete with an original two-tone blue magazine with the diamond pattern checkered walnut grips.

Very fine as noted still in the original factory, in the white, unfinished condition with the most of the various small parts retaining 90% of their blue finish. The front grip strap shows several areas of very small oxidation or erosion, probably from just handing and using this weapon without proper cleaning. The grips are very good with a dark color, nice distinct checkering, showing handling marks and use. A very rare and unique original Remington-UMC factory cutaway pistol.
