British Pattern 1868 Lance dated 1915. The lance has the Pattern 1868 Head and Pattern 1868 Shoe with on the original nine-foot Indian bamboo shaft. The lance is complete with the original regulation red and white cotton pennon. A buff leather strap is wrapped around the shaft at the balance point. The lance head is stamped: "No. 1 IP" above the British Army "Broad Arrow" property mark and "CO I 1/5 G 1915". The shoe is stamped with an additional unit marking "17/L" (17th Lancers). The British cavalry adopted the lance in 1816 after experience with Napoleon's Polish lancers in Spain and at the Battle of Waterloo, and used it in action for the first time in India in 1822. Lances remained a weapon of some British, Canadian and Indian cavalry regiments through WWI and were used in action on a number of occasions in France as late as 1918 and with great success against Turkish armies in Palestine and Iraq from 1916-1918. The Pattern 1868 Lance was withdrawn from service in 1927. This historic weapon was probably the last pole arm used in combat by a Western Army.

Very good. The iron lance head and shoe are bright and have sharp markings. The bamboo shaft is excellent. The buff leather strap is bright. The regulation red and white pennon is detached and requires minor repair but can be re-attached to the lance without difficulty. This is a very good example of a seldom encountered but important cavalry weapon that saw wide service with British and colonial cavalry regiments during "The Great War".
