The Third Model or Model 1883 saddle ring carbine is not listed in any reference works, but they were made in limited quantities. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, with no markings on the barrel, "PAT. OCT. 16. 1860. JUNE 25. 1872. JULY 23. 1878. / / FEB.15.1870.N0V.9. 1875.NOV.14.1876.JAN.23.1877" on the lower tang, "MODEL OF 1883" on the upper and "HC" on the left side of the rear sight. Note the lack of a Winchester marking. This was equipped with a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver below the Mason designed safety and cut off levers. Smooth straight grip stock with a single barrel band and a smooth buttplate. The accompanying copy of the Cody Firearms Museum Records sheet verifies serial number 34354 as a "HOTCH" model, carbine, "M83" caliber, 20" barrel shipped 11-29-1884 to order number 17638. Reportedly only two known, but not verified.

Condition: Excellent with 95% original blue on the barrel and 75% bright casehardening colors on the action, showing some fading of the colors, areas of brown patina on the barrel and scattered handling marks and spotting. The rear sight is a replacement, probably from one of the military contracts. Some dings and splinters are visible on the forearm, otherwise the wood is very fine. Mechanically excellent.
