Rare WWII German J. P. Sauer K98 Sniper Rifle with Swept Back Style Scope Mount and ZF 4 Scope
This is an example of a late-war production K98 rifle made by J. P. Sauer and Sohns with one of the copies of a late war variant Swept-Back style sniper mount. These swept-back mounts were produced at the very end of WWII and saw very limited use before the war ended. The standard style of Swept-back mount has been noted on both Mauser and J.P. Sauer and Sohns K98 rifles. The rifle is equipped with a ZF4 extended eye relief sniper scope. These late war mounts were intended to be an easy to produce, rigid and robust scope mount and base system that could be easily mount on the standard K98 rifle, without special sized receivers or complicated soldering and mounting techniques, that utilized the new ZF4 style of scope that was also a war expedient version of the traditional German sniper scopes. The left side of the scope is marked "ZF 4 dow triangle" over "13244". It has the leather cover with a wooden plug on the optic end. The top of the receiver ring is marked "ce" over "44". An "eagle / 37" proofmark appears above the "ce" mark, an "eagle / 280" proof on the right side and the Nazi firing proof, and serial number are marked on the left side. The left side receiver wall is marked "Mod 98". The breech end of the barrel is marked "C9" on the left behind the Nazi firing proof and there are two very small "eagle / 37" proofs on top. Hooded ramp front sight and tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Stamped barrel bands and milled floor plate and trigger guard with "Mod 98" marked winter cover and late key lock safety. The walnut stock has eagle proofs on the left and underside of the buttstock. The rifle is complete with a cleaning rod and brown leather sling with cross hatch pattern.
