Rare Vintage Texas Ranger Sheriff Cinco Coin Badge
This is a rare badge made from a Mexican Cinco Peso Coin and marked, "Deputy Sheriff TSCHIRHART Texas 704" for a Texas Ranger or Texas Deputy Sheriff. It was common practice to have silversmiths, artist or the officer himself in early Texas history to create their own badge using Mexican silver cinco peso coins, as is well documented. Mexican coins were used as the officers did not want to deface U.S. or Texas coins and the Mexican coins had a higher silver content. These badges were originally in this circle with five-point star configuration for the Texas Rangers and have also been made by such silversmiths as Charles Simmang of San Antonio who made badges for both the Texas Rangers and other Texas law enforcers. The back of this badge shows remnants of the Mexican design and is signed / stamped "RS" and "4 . 92". The front shows a golden like edge with hand etched border. The badge appears to have an older vintage age and to be an original Texas Ranger or other Texas Deputy Sheriff origin. Measures 1 5/8" diameter and 1.5"L with the pin back protruding. Total weight of
