This is an excellent grouping of original Vietnam issue Special Forces (Green Beret) items that include an original SF inscribed Gerber knife, a B-56 Detachment shoulder patch, and two original CIA identification cards. If you are at all familiar with the general operations of the Special Forces "A" teams during Vietnam, one of the most coveted items by each team member was the famous and fully functional "Gerber" fighting knife. These knives were highly sought after by all SF members, as they were probably one of the best fighting knives used in Vietnam. They were basically an updated Fairbairn-Sikes fighting knife produced by Gerber factory, that featured an aluminum cast handle (that didn't deteriorate in the jungles) that had a thin stiletto stabbing type blade with a weighted front end, that was razor sharp on the edges. The upper end of the blade directly below the cross guard has the original "Knife in a stone logo/GERBER/Portland Ore. U.S.A." markings with the original issue number "007554" on the reverse side. The blade is inscribed "SIGMA --- GREEN BERET/VIETNAM --- VIETNAM" and is complete with the original "GERBER" marked leather scabbard and sharpening steel on the front. Project "SIGMA" was established in 1966/67 as a multi-force operational unit that was established to aggressively patrol any of the NVA/VC held territories, conduct reconnaissance and intelligence gathering missions, interdiction of any of the NVA supply routes, patrolling and conducting prisoner snatches, ambushes and hunter-killer teams, all intended to destroy the VC infrastructure. Eventually this operational team as well as the later project OMEGA and DELTA teams, all fell under the control of MACV/SOG, which was the military side of the CIA run missions in Vietnam. Also accompanying this rare knife is an original "B-56" shoulder patch, as well as an original 5th Special Forces, installation pass. These passes allowed the wearer entry into all of the top secret/classified briefings within the Special Forces controlled areas. Next two-original, Vietnam issue "Get Out of Jail Free Cards" identification cards. These were a special identification card that was issued by MACV/SOG when under the control of the CIA, that allowed original operational team member to travel throughout Vietnam unabated. Team members were instructed that if stopped for any reason they were to provide these ID cards, which contained specific instructions that they are not to be detained for any reason and that they are allowed to wear any type of clothing, (without rank or unit insignia) carry any type of weapon (i.e. silenced, as well as any nonstandard SMG or other weapons) or any other equipment and to carry large sums of money. These passes are very rare today as they were all ordered to be surrendered and destroyed after individuals left those specific teams. Both passes still have the original team members id, photos along with their service number, which could help conducting further research on these individuals. Also included is a copy of the after-action reports on some of the various missions conducted under project SIGMA. This was declassified and published in 1996 and was dedicated to MSG Alan Goad, project SIGMA platoon Sergeant. Certainly would be interesting reading.
