Rare V-42 Case Stiletto with Long Drop Leather Scabbard

This is an extremely rare and desirable WWII V42 Stiletto produced by the Case Cutlery Company in 1943. These Stiletto's were patterned after the Fairborn-Sikes Commando knives and were issued to "The First Special Services", commonly called "The Devils Brigade". This unit was a composite unit made up of both Canadian and U.S. Army forces trained in Command Warfare. They were the true forerunners of the current Special Forces or Green Berets. There were approximately 3,600 of these knives manufactured and they are characterized by the slender 7 5/16 inch stabbing blade, thumb print below the guard, serrated one-piece leather handle and the steel pointed "Skull Crusher" end cap. The leather scabbard is the long version designed to be worn on the belt, slung down the side and tied to the leg. The scabbard is both sewn around the edges and has 14 steel rivets evenly spaced around the edges. The throat of the scabbard has eight staples across the top and a leather leg tie-down. The name "HILL" is scratched into the handle at the handguard. According to consignor notes that only ten officer's and enlisted men named Hill are on the roster of the Devils Brigade.

Fine. The blade retains almost all of the original blue finish and the blade edges remain sharp. The handle shows little wear. The sheath is fair showing extensive overall wear and corrosion on the rivets. There is some minor flex wear and "HILL" is lightly scratched into the back. This is one of the scarcest U.S. fighting knives to find and is highly sought after by collectors.
