Famed 19th Century poet and philosopher Henry David Thoreau autograph manuscript unsigned, with no date or place, though presumably removed from one of the the author's numerous notebooks, though not found in his published writings. Here, the author writes 10 lines in clear bold ink with themes reminiscent to that in ''Walden Pond'', ''...principle witness. We do not want want [sic] to see hear the man who saw the track only - or even followed the trail - and found the bones and the hide and deposited them in his cabinet - but him whose sheep the wolf killed who has summered and wintered within hearing of his howl - and who finally encountered and overcame him - This will be - this is the only report which''. On the verso of the notes (photocopy is present), Thoreau writes in pencil, in part: ''Dr Gould, report this singular fact is / recorded in...'' Presumably Dr. Augustus A. Gould, a member of the Boston Society of Natural History and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences whom Thoreau knew. Notes are written on a single sheet measuring 7.5'' x 3'' and are matted with an engraved portrait of Thoreau and framed to an overall size of 13.5'' x 19.5''. Near fine.
