Rare Ulrich Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine

Winchester Third Model 1866 saddle ring carbine with full nickel plated finish manufactured c.1876. The frame and trigger guard heel are factory engraved with bold Germanic scrollwork on a punch dot background. The left side of the frame features a game scene of a standing whitetail deer. The style of engraving is nearly identical to Ulrich engraved nickel plated Model 1866 muskets serial number 128455 and 134957 illustrated on page 93 and 95 of "WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. The right side of the frame features an inscription scroll which occupies most of the side plate behind the loading gate. The scroll is not inscribed. The carbine has a round barrel with integral barrel band and front sight blade and early style two-leaf rear sight. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the frame. The carbine style buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The trap contains a jointed steel cleaning rod with brass head. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENt-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866.OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "127067" is stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger. Factory engraved Model 1866 carbines are very rare.

Extremely fine. The game scene and bold Germanic scrollwork are crisp and deep. The barrel markings are sharp. The carbine retains 90% plus of the nickel plated finish. Wear is limited to some minor flaking; primarily on the lever, hammer and loading gate. The nickel plating is period but may not be factory work. The stock and forearm are both very fine with a few minor dents and scratches This is a very fine example of a rare Ulrich engraved Winchester Model 1866 carbine with equally rare nickel plated finish.
