Rare U.S. North Model 1808 Navy Flintlock Martial Pistol

Estimate: $2500 - 4000
The U.S. Navy contracted for the manufacture of 3,000 of these pistols in 1808. Simeon North delivered the entire contract in the next two years. It was his second contract and the first under which the pistols were manufactured to have interchangeable parts. These pistols saw significant use during the War of 1812 as they were the only pistols manufactured for the infant United States Army. Marked with a spread wing eagle over "U. STATES." in front of the hammer and "BERLIN." vertically at the tail of the lock plate, and the top of the barrel at the breech is marked "U. STATES.". No inspector marks are visible on the barrel or stock. The flash pan, trigger guard, butt cap, ramrod pipe and left side plate are brass, the remaining parts are iron. There is a 5 inch belt hook mounted on the left flat. It appears to be slightly narrow but matches the condition of the barrel alongside of it. Mounted with a walnut stock with a faint crude "PB" marking on the left upper wrist. With a hickory ramrod.
BBL: 10 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 64

Serial Number: nsn
Condition: Good. The barrel, hammer and belt hook have been cleaned and for the most part remain bright. The lock has a smooth mottled gray patina. The brass has a very dark, untouched age patina. The reoiled stock has been sanded in the grip area and remains good with some minor chipping on the lower front edge of the right flat, a minor crack on the upper left side at the breech and overall a few minor marks. The markings are clear. The action is very good.
