Rare U.S. Navy Model 1882 Flare Pistol
This is the first U.S. cartridge flare pistol to use a paper flare cartridge. These pistols were manufactured at the U.S. Navy Yard at Washington, D.C. (USNYW) with about 100 produced between 1882 and 1884. This pistol is marked "ORD.DEP.U.S.N.Y.W. / 1884 / anchor / J.A.H." on the right side of the brass frame. The brass barrel is correctly attached to the frame by a loose fitting screw at the barrel midpoint. The barrel pulls forward of the frame and swivels 360 degrees for loading and unloading, which can be done at either the breech or muzzle end of the barrel. Matching serial number on barrel, frame, and right grip, with the number "12" on the left grip.
