Manufactured by William F. Brooks of New York City, this is a rare example of one of the 1,052 Gibbs Carbines delivered to the U.S. government circa 1863. Around 500 Gibbs Carbines were issued to the 10th Missouri Cavalry with lesser quantities issued to the 13th and 14th New York Cavalry. The lock plate has an eagle behind the hammer and the "Wm. F. BROOKS/MANFED NEW YORK/1863" stamped in front of the hammer. The top of the receiver is marked "L.H. GIBBS/PAT'D/JANY 8, 1856" at the breech. Blade front sight and a three leaf rear sight graduated up to 500 yards with the base having a small letter "B". The carbine stock has a sling bar with ring mounted on the left side and "US" marked buttplate.

Condition: Good. The carbine has a mottled brown patina with some very scattered pin point pitting. The stock is fair with a number of minor pressure dents, a minor crack on the underside of the forearm and "HH" hand marked ahead of the lever. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
