Transitional models are found in two different serial number ranges 3200-3700 and 6800-8000, with this revolver falling into the latter. The Transitional Models are identified by a combination of a 2nd Model American interlocking hammer and latch with a 1st Model American flat bottom frame. The top of the barrel rib is marked "+SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A PAT. JULY10. 60. JAN 17. JULY 11. 65 & AUG. 24. 69+". The serial number is marked on the butt and the matching assembly number "J4" is marked on the rear cylinder face, barrel latch and barrel. Slightly altered front blade front and notch rear sights, all nickel finish and fitted with smooth ivory grips. The accompanying factory letter verifies the Model 3 American Transition configuration, 8 inch barrel and smooth walnut grips at the time of shipment to M.W. Robinson, New York, N.Y. on January 15, 1872. The shipment was for 60 units which were a mix of blue and nickel finished. The letter also states that the ivory grips were probably added by Mr. Robinson to fill a special order.
