Manufactured circa 1888 to 1893 with the distinctive removable side plate on the right side of the action which has five screws. The action has the takedown screw that is flush with the underside of the receiver. Combination beach front and fixed notch rear sights on a barrel marked "J. STEVENS A.&T.Co. CHICOPEE FALLS MASS. PAT'D AUG.11, 1885" on the upper left flat. Vernier tang peep sight, nickel plated Swiss type buttplate, and smooth forearm and straight grip stock. The barrel is numbered to the gun. Two photocopied pages pertaining to the history of the Stevens Side Plate Rifle are provided. Around 2,000 Side Plate Rifles were produced.

Condition: Fine. The barrel retains 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The action has a smooth brown patina with traces of original case colors on the breechblock and hammer. There is some minor pitting. The wood is fine with some minor dings and scratches along with a series of pressure dents on the buttstock (left side).
