Steigerwalt, Chas. STEIGERWALT'S COIN JOURNAL. A BI-MONTHLY MAGAZINE DEVOTED TO NUMISMATICS. Vol. I, Nos. 3 and 6. Lancaster, November 1883 and May-June 1884. Two issues, of eight published. 8vo, original printed wraps. Fine. [with] Steigerwalt, Chas. NUMISMATIC NEWS. No. 2. Lancaster, May 1895. One of only four issues published. Tabloid format [29.5 by 22.5 cm], folded in thirds as usually seen. 8 pages. Some separation at vertical fold. Near fine. [with] Steigerwalt, Chas. THE CURIO. No. 6. Lancaster, June 1899. One of twelve issues published. 8vo, self-covered as issued. Near fine. Steigerwalt's various periodical publications are all very difficult to collect, and this lot allows one the opportunity to have at least one copy of three of them (his first, simply called The Coin Journal, is not represented here). The Salutatory of the Steigerwalt's Coin Journal proclaimed: "In again entering the fields of numismatic journalism, we hope that in presenting our old Coin Journal in a new and attractive form, our friends will encourage our present venture as they did its predecessor. It will be our endeavor to make it bright, interesting and spicy, and so desirable to collectors that each number will be cherished and its successor eagerly looked for." His Numismatic News is the rarest of the Steigerwalt publications, which, given the rarity of all of them, is saying something. While arguably the best of his four periodicals, its tabloid format and brittle paper have ensured an almost total lack of survival. Completely lacking from both Champa and Bass. The Curio is also a very rare publication. It functioned more as a fixed price list than a periodical, which may account for its poor survival rate. It was also completely lacking from both the Champa and Bass libraries.
