Rare Smith & Wesson Model 1940 Mark I Semi-Automatic Light Rifle with Spare Magazines and Original Leather Sling

This is an exceptional, like new original Smith & Wesson Model 1940 "MK1" semi-automatic light rifle manufactured for the British government, prior to WWII. These were also submitted as a candidate/competitor in the US Army test trials for the M1 Carbine prior to WWII. These are a very small, lightweight and compact rifle, that would have been very handy on the battle field. However due to the reliability/safety failure issues and general instability of this design that was discovered during the test trials by both the British Government and the U.S. Army, it was rejected. Almost all examples were destroyed by the S&W Company. It is estimated that less than 100 escaped destruction by S&W and still remain in the US today. Interestingly, In 1990, approximately 10 original carbines were discovered, still stored in their original wooden shipping crate in a S&W warehouse and were subsequently sold to an astute collector. Due to the almost new condition of this example, it may have been one of those original rifles and would certainly be worth of additional research. The wide magazine housing serves a dual purpose, the front section holds the actual magazine and the rear portion is actually the ejection port for the fired cartridge cases, which are ejected downward instead of up into the air. The front sight is a fixed blade, with an adjustable notch sight completing the set. The action operates from an open bolt, with the cocking knob on the right side, above the patent numbers. The pistol grip stock is made of a early style black plastic/composition material, with a serrated metal buttplate. This model still being all original, lacks the red metal plaque that was originally attached by Smith & Wesson, to the left side of the buttstock of these carbines, that read "EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS DO NOT LOAD OR FIRE THIS RIFLE". This rifle is complete with four original S&W magazines and rare original S&W leather sling.
