Rare and Desirable H. Slotterbek Model 1874 Sporting Rifle, #C52X31, in scarce .38 cal., 30'' part-round brown barrel marked ''H. Slotterbek, Los Angeles'' in gabled manner over ''Cal''. Left side flat marked ''Gain Twist/Wart/Silver Steel''. Case hardened frame, checkered pistol-grip walnut stock, with nickel silver ovoid plaque in left and right cheek area and just above triggers, as well as details at pistol-grip cap, toe of stock at buttplate, sunburst motif forward the lever on forend, details to both sides of forend wedge and bottom of forend, making for eleven added German silver detailed ornaments. Brass buttplate, Germanic Pennsylvania type rifled cheekpiece, thick base mid-range vernier tang sight, with many other small details such as small cut-out to receiver ring to allow for better grip and tang sight adjustment; ivory blade front sight, fancy pewter end cap, and finely made adjustable double set triggers. This rifle was purchased by our consignor in t!
he early 1970's from the original family located in the Camarillo area. Condition is excellent. Brown toned barrel shows light thinning to finish at balance area. Stock with minor scuffs, scratches and dings from handling, and very light flattening to checks. Case hardened frame, hammer, lever, and breechblock remain mostly vivid; hues with some silvering at highpoints at wrist area. Tang sight is a slightly later replacement but definitely correct and from the period. There is an additional plug screw hole beneath existing tang sight, thus the ''X'' in the serial number. Original hickory wiping rod has the last 25% broken off but does not show when installed. Action remains crisp, set triggers function as designed, bore is mirror bright excellent. A rare opportunity to acquire an upgraded sporting rifle by a famous 19th Century Southern California gunsmith which remains in stunning condition. Est.: $15,000-$20,000.
