Rare Sioux Black Elk Medicine Double Groove Axe
The lot features a large double groove stone club head pounder dating back to the 1700's to 1800's from the Sioux Black Elk family. The piece comes with paperwork from The Guns of History. Wendell Grangaard took testimony from Nicholas Black Elk's son Benjamin Black Elk in the fall of 1967. He believes this was given to either John Neihardt or Joseph Epes Brown. The stone was noted as being in the Black Elk family for approximately 300 years. Five generations of the Black Elk's were Wakan (Medicine Man) with Nicholas Black Elk being the last generations of Wakans. The stone is marked in Togia Lakota language marks "Wakan - Black Elk - Thunder Being - Morning Star - Battle - Greasy Grass (Little Bighorn)". This is a large double full-groove pounder axe stone head with one side being slightly rounded but mostly flat and the other a typical stone axe head with rounded tapering point. The stone comes with paperwork. Measures 6.5" by 4" by 3.5".
