Rare Signed Cabinet Photo of Clinton B. Fisk.
Rare Signed Cabinet Photo of Clinton B. Fisk, Union General and 1888 Prohibition Party Candidate for President. Fisk garnered 2.2% of the popular vote against Cleveland and Harrison in 1888. An ardent early abolitionist and temperance advocate, he joined the army in 1861 as a private, but rose to the rank of brevet major general, serving with Grant at Vicksburg and later commanding the District of St. Louis. Active in business and charitable pursuits in the decades after the war, Fisk was an active Republican until 1884, when he broke to support Prohibition candidate John St. John. In 1886 he ran as a Prohibitionist for New Jersey Governor, before receiving the national nomination two years later.

Owing to his active public life, Fisk's autograph is not terribly rare in some forms. But we have never seen a signed photo, nor does the authoritative Sanders guide list one. This example is especially nice, as it is signed boldly on the front side, along with "Brvt. Maj. Genl. U.S. Vols." Excellent condition. For accuracy we note the removal of the revenue stamp over the photographer's imprint on verso. 4.25" x 6.5".
