Rare Salesman Sample Sitting Bull & The Indian War
This is a Very Rare Salesman Sample of "Sitting Bull and The Indian War” by W. Fletcher Johnson, 1891. These specimen books were used by the agents of publishers to entice customers to agree to purchase a copy of a work in advance of delivery. This form of marketing was common in America during the years just before and after the Civil War. The book shows the most popular gold gilt embossed front cover showing a portrait of Sitting Bull at the top with a battle scene vignette below, medallion images of both Major General Miles and U.S. Deputy Bartlett. At the bottom of the cover is a vignette of the Ghost Dance, embossed title as such. Insert cards from the publisher describe the binding alternative and also the contents of the actual book, In the back of the book are ledger pages for the salesman to log the subscriber’s signature, residence, style of banding, and price (agreed upon). The green cloth bound gold gilt illustrated stamped hardcover is in nice condition, scuffing and gilt fading exhibited. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing throughout, measures 5.5"W x 8"L x .75"D.
