Rare Revolutionary War German-Dutch Flintlock Musket
This is an example of a Revolutionary War Era German-Dutch flintlock musket that was manufactured circa 1760 to 1780. A musket of a very similar configuration to this one but with a shorter, 42-inch barrel, is illustrated on page 80 of "WEAPONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION" by George Neumann. The description states that muskets of this type were issued to German troops who served with the British Army in North America. The configuration of the musket is generally similar to the British 1st Pattern Brown Bess musket but the musket is more crudely made. The walnut pin fastened stock has brass furniture with four ramrod pipes. The relief-carved beavertails around the barrel tang, lock and side plate are similar to those on the Brown Bess muskets. The banana-shaped lock plate has beveled edges, a single bridle, goose neck shaped cock and fenced iron pan. The frizzen has been re-faced. The only markings on the exterior of the musket is the unit marking "C:42" prominently engraved on the top of the barrel opposite the frizzen. The Consignor states that this musket was personally examined by author George Neumann who identified it as a German-Dutch musket used in the American Revolution.
BBL: 46 inch
Stock: walnut
Gauge:
Finish: bright
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Good as restored. The professionally lengthened barrel has a smooth, gray-brown patina; there is light flash pitting around the flash hole. The lock has expected flash pitting on the pan but is generally free from pitting and has an artificial smooth brown patina. The once varnished stock shows moderate handling wear and has also been lengthened. This is a good example of a Brown Bess pattern, German-Dutch flintlock musket of the type carried by German troops who served with the British Army in North America during the American Revolution.
