This is a rare example of a Punjab Medal awarded to a 24th Regiment of Foot casualty, Thomas Chappel, at Chilianwala . The Battle of Chilianwala occurred during the Second Anglo-Sikh War. Chilianwala was one of the bloodiest battles fought by the British East India Company. Both sides claimed victory. The medal has the recipient's name marked along the edge of the silver medal ("T. CHAPPEL, 24th FOOT.") and the Chilianwala clasp. According to a list of Punjab casualties featured on the website www.redcoat.info, Thomas Chappel was a private who served in the 24th Regiment of foot and was killed in action at Chilianwala.
