Here's a jewel that will make you the envy of all in this season of Statement Necklaces. It's one of the largest and most elaborate Tumbaga frog effigies we've ever seen, measuring a full 2 inches long and surfaced with dazzling, extremely high-carat gold.

Found with normal and natural patina circa 1950, the piece was then reconditioned: polished and possibly also gold-dipped to restore its original pre-Columbian appearance. The large bale may have been added at that time. Thus, wearing it as necklace pendant won't harm this wonderful piece of ancient art.

Tumbaga, if the term is unfamiliar, refers to a coppery gold alloy used circa in Central America. Pieces made of this material were surfaced in higher-quality gold. The frog was the traditional symbol for power and fruitfulness. Similar pieces -- smaller and less intricate but in as-found condition -- are selling online for $1500 to $2000. This frog, if not reconditioned, would be a museum piece worth far more.
