Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 70
This is a beautiful example of an early post-WWII Winchester Model 70 transitional super grade carbine in the very desirable .300 magnum. These Super Grade carbines exhibited the best workmanship that Winchester could provide at this time. This specific example was manufactured in the 1946-47 time frame and has the type I/II receiver and bolt. This is a very desirable carbine configuration with the short 20 inch barrel, along with a standard front sight, a blank rear sight filler slot and a Lyman 48 WJS micrometer rear sight. It has a very late type one receiver with the pre-war style clover-leaf tang, matted top on the front and rear receiver rings with only two plugged scope base holes, drilled in the front receiver ring with the rear of the front receiver also correctly notched for the magnum cartridge. It is fitted with a matching serial numbered type two bolt and the earlier type two safety lever. The barrel is 20 inches long and marked on the underside of the chamber area "300 M 42", which indicated the year of the barrel blank. The left side of the barrel is roll marked with the type 3a barrel markings that consist of the two-line Winchester address, trademark and Winchester Proof Steel barrel marking followed by "Model 70---.300 MAGNUM". The floor plate is correctly marked "SUPER GRADE" in the center. It has an original Winchester Super Grade carbine stock with the small oval cheekpiece on the left side, checkered forend and pistol grip area, Winchester marked grip cap and deluxe super grade detachable sling swivels (now missing) along with the ebony forend tip.

Serial Number: 56840
Condition:
Very fine with 90% plus of the blue finish. Wear on the edges and high spots with thinning and blue loss on the floor plate. The receiver also retains 99% of the correct bead blasted, blue finish. The bolt is correctly still in the white and has a matching serial number on the underside. The stock is very fine with 90% of the original stock finish showing handling marks, nicks, light dings and scratches from light hunting and use. The checkering is excellent with nice distinct original diamonds from the factory and minimal handling marks. This is an exceptionally nice and very scarce early post-WWII transitional Model 70 Carbine in a highly desirable, scarce caliber.
