Rare Postal Usage. Letter with strong Philadelphia content including the cholera epidemic, Aug. 7, 1849, with "Blood's Post Office Dispatch" stamp-label, tied by acid! #15L17. With bright blue Philadelphia circular datestamp. From Wm. Nassau, Philadelphia, 2 1/2 pp., 7 1/2 x 9 3/4 , to brother in Easton, Pa. "...You remember some years ago how we were afflicted with it...Perhaps you have forgot the remedy we used to get free of it. It is 1 oz. beet red bark, 1 oz. cream of tartar, 1/2 oz. of ground cloves, mixed together, and when free from chill & fever to take 3 or 5 teaspoonsfull for 3 or 4 days...I hope the Lord is going to restore our City to health again. The air seems to have undergone a change...The eating (of) corn, peas, cucumbers, cabbage, apples and other green fruits has suddenly brought on the cholera and the patient has quickly passed into the colapst state...The Dr. has bought no berries for his family...." Describing his diet to ward off cholera: coffee, tea, broiled ham, potatoes, stewed tomatoes, and other foods. About a dozen fine holes at left margin, probably where stitched into an old letterbook, blue postmark smudged when applied, the "Blood's" stamp-label a dark copper, and generally fine.
