Rare Photo Robert E Lee & Confederate Officers Rare Photo of Robert E Lee and Confederate Officers.
Rare Photo of Robert E Lee and Confederate Officers. Very rare albumen photograph, 7.5" x 5.75", of General Lee and his Confederate officers in their first meeting since Appomattox, taken at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in August 1869, where they met to discuss "the orphaned children of the Lost Cause". Gen. Beauregard, Gen. G.W.C. Lee, Gen. Lawton, Gen. Henry Wise, Gen. Gary, Gen. Lilley, Gen. Conner, Gen. Brent of Louisiana and Gen. Magruder of Texas are depicted with Mr. Corcoran, (namesake of Corcoran Museum) a philanthropist from Washington, D.C., and George Peabody (namesake of Peabody Museum), Mr. Jasper Lyon of Richmond, among others. This perhaps the most remarkable photograph of Robert E. Lee in existence, and it is the only from life photograph of Lee with his Generals in existence, during the war or after. The original owner dockets it on verso shortly after it was taken in 1869. Without a doubt, the rarest photograph of Lee.
