This is a rare example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1847 Sappers Musketoon, a.k.a "Sappers and Miners", manufactured in 1855. In 1855 a total of 80 Sappers and Miners were made with a total of 830 made over a 9 year period. (Note that of the 830 produced 228 were altered to Model 1847 Artillery configuration, making this original musketoon very rare.) The lock plate is marked with the "eagle" motif over "US" ahead of the hammer with the date "1855" stamped behind the hammer. The date "1855" is also present on the barrel tang. The left side of the barrel has "V/P/eagle head" markings at the breech. Front barrel band has a brass blade sight and a lug for a saber type bayonet mounted on the right side with the large type bayonet guide affixed to the right side of the barrel. The left stock flat has the number "273358" stamped over a cartouche. The buttplate tang is marked "US". An iron trumpet ramrod is included. The accompanying distinctive Model 1847 Sappers and Miners bayonet was produced by Ames in 1855. A total of 830 of these bayonets were manufactured by N.P. Ames between 1848 and 1855. The bayonet features a 22 inch double edge wasp waist blade and a cast brass hilt with straight quillions and an eagle feather pattern grip. The obverse of the hilt has a cast muzzle ring with iron locking ring. The obverse ricasso is stamped "AMES MFG/CHICOPEE/MASS" and the reverse is stamped with the inspection mark "US/ADK/1855". The flat portion on side of hilt carries the inspector marks, ADK/R.H.K.W.
