Rare O-Series Smith & Wesson Pre-1917 Double Action Revolver, #0284, .45 ACP/Auto rim cal., 5-1/2'' barrel, blue finish, smooth factory walnut grips with lanyard loop in butt. Early commercial version of their 2nd Model swing-out revolver. Factory letter confirms all features, as shipped to Donald Birnie, Jan. 3, 1918. The Birnie's were a prominent Springfield, Mass. Family, and there is an avenue in Springfield named for them. The large iron frence surrounding the Springfield Armory was built by the Birnie family. Donald Birnie, the revolver's original owner, was a physician in Springfield when WWII broke out. Birnie family members do not recall the revolver ever being fired. The revolver remained in the Birnie family until 2002 when a grandson sold it off. These O-Series group of handguns is comprised of numerous models, and the serial number range recorded is from 01 to 0548. Condition is excellent showing light and minor scratching, and very slight holster wear at muzzle, as well as near two flutes of the cylinder. Factory S&W grips are near perfect.
