Borghesi, Bartolomo. ŒUVRES COMPLÈTES DE BARTOLOMEO BORGHESI. PUBLIÉES PAR LES ORDRES ET AUX FRAIS DE S. M. L’EMPEREUR NAPOLÉON III. ŒUVRES NUMISMATIQUES. TOME PREMIER. TOME DEUXIÈME. Paris: Imprimerie Impériale, 1862-64. Two volumes. 4to [28 by 23 cm], contemporary matching brown half morocco with marbled boards, rebacked in lighter brown leather, gilt; marbled endpapers; top page edges red. viii, 516, (2); (2), 560 pages; 1 + 2 engraved plates of coins by Dardel. Cracked at hinges, partly repaired when rebacked; lacking rear flyleaf of second volume. Very good. A very rare work, the first copy of which we have offered in decades. “At about the same time that E. Beulé published his book Les Monnaies d’Athènes ... the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres began to issue Borghesi’s Oeuvres, under the personal initiative of Emperor Napoleon III; the first two volumes, published in 1862 (sic), were exclusively devoted to numismatics” (Babelon, page 144).
