This wood sculpture from Northern Congo of a female holding her breasts is a classic African motif symbolizing abundance and fertility. Carved from a very heavy tropical hardwood, this figure does not show the usual scarification patterns on the eyebrows and nose that typify Ngbaka sculpture (although there is a possible scarification line down her stomach), so this sculpture may represent an uninitiated female who has not yet received her initiation into womanhood, but who nonetheless represents the ideal female youth. While this piece shares some affinities with carvings from a number of Northern Congo tribes, such as the Ngbandi, it is the sculptural treatment of the legs that identifies it as Ngbaka. Sculpture from this region is not frequently seen on the market and must be considered as scarce. A good example of sculpture from this part of the Congo. Height: 9 inches, 22.5 cm. Custom metal base included.
