Rare Needle Fire Montigny Shotgun. Montigny System shotgun, about 16 gauge, 25" barrels, marked “Montigny & Dusnot (?) a Brurelles” in gold script. All iron parts are fully engraved with wildlife (fox, swan, birds and tight scroll), beautifully figured stock with tight checkering. System was patented in Britain in 1849, though it mainly saw use on the continent -- a long lever actuates 2 separate brass cylinders that glide into the breech of the barrels, “needles” are propelled from the cylinders to ignite cartridge, which appears to have been consumed on firing. All of this fine milling at a time when machines were run by water power and fitting was by hand. CONDITION: Pleasing smooth brown overall, all of the fine engraving is clear and very well-executed, wood is in excellent condition, gun bears its own ebony ram rod that was probably used to remove any part of the cartridge not consumed.
