Rare! A very high quality Cizhouyao with sgraffito decoration, Northern Song Dynasty, ca.AD960-1127!!

A rare and very fine Northern Song dynasty CiZhouYao with Sgraffito decoration and transparent glaze, ca. The dimensions are 11-3/4" tall by 6-3/4" widest. Prior to firing the leathery-hard clay body was carved and incised, in this case, with a scrolling peony design. Next a white or cream slip was applied, probably painted. As this process would have caused some of the slip to fill some of the carved and incised details, the details would have to have been "cleanup" or refreshed before the final clear glaze was applied and fired. This meiping has an unusual oval shape and ornamentation. This style of meiping and decorationg was typical of the Dengfeng potters in Henan province, Northern China. Above the shoulder, the meiping is decorated with a scrolling frieze and above the foot rim, it is decorated with incised lotus panels. The glaze stops unevenly just above the foot rim. The foot rim is thick and short with an unglaze rim. The center revealing the applied white/cream slip. The overall condition consensus is extremely fine condition, museum quality, without any injury, damage or repair.
