Rare Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese U.S. Magazine Bolt Action Rifle, by Springfield Armory, NVSN, .45-70 cal., 28" barrel, blue finish, polished bright bolt, one-piece walnut stock with two barrel bands and "SWP/1884" cartouche. Rear sight is 1873 type. Left side of breech marked "U.S. Springfield 1884"; barrel with "VP" and eaglehead proof. Invented by Gen. J.N. Reese and R.S. Chaffee, approved for U.S. government service in 1882 by an Ordnance Board responsible for selecting a magazine repeating rifle. Considered rare with only 753 produced. Condition is excellent retaining all the original Springfield Armory rust-type blue, with only light thinning and toning. Stock with minor scuffs and nicks and crystal clear cartouche, with very small loss to wood at forward edge of receiver. Light toning to bright polished bolt. Moderate internal carbon spotting to ramp area. Action is crisp, bore is mirror bright. Hard to improve upon. Est.: $6,000-$8,000. (C&R)
