Rare Maynard 1st Model percussion breechloading single shot carbine, .50 cal., 20” barrel, grey patina, wood butt stock with iron patchbox, no sling swivel bar, swivel ring affixed to bottom tang, #160. This gun is in overall good to verygood condition showing a grey patina with scattered pinprick pitting, good markings including a “K” over “J.T.” inspectors’ markings on left side of barrel flat at breech, good action, overall good bore, Maynard primer “gate”hinge somewhat loose but intact and complete; right side external frame small “S” pin missing tail section; wood butt stock is overall very good with minor scratches and edge losses. Per Flayderman’s, only 400 U.S. Army purchased, all in .50 caliber, all delivered by March, 1859 and sent to the St. Louis Arsenal. From there, 60 were known to be issued from Ft. Union, New Mexico Territory to the Regiment of Mounted Rifles; approx. 100 each went to Companies I and H of the1st Cavalry which saw service in the Indian campaigns and Civil War. An opportunity to obtain a seldom-offered Model that is in surprisingly good condition considering its age and the model’s associated history of hard battle use!
