An incredible mass mortality fossil fish plate from the famous Green River Formation, Wyoming, USA. Ready to frame or mount.<p>Dimensions are approx. 19" tall by 17" wide. The Green River Lake system was formed in western Wyoming at the time the age of dinosaur ended, approx. 55 million-33 years ago! This was known as the Eocene Epoch. The climate in this region way back then was probably tropical. It was also characterized by seasonal rainy season that brought a deposit of fine mud into the lakes each year. This layer of fine mud covered the bodies of fish and other animals and plants that fell to the bottom. Preventing the normal decay process resulted in some of the most numerous and beautiful fossils found anywhere in the world.<p>This fossil fish plate depicts what is called a mass mortality. There appears to be 4 types of fish fossil found on this plate. There are an amazing 20+ fish fossils (complete and partial) on this mass mortality plate. There a numerous Knightia ranging in 3 to 4.5" long. There are a few Dyplomystus fossils all about 3.75 to 4" long. There also appears to be a partial (tail section) of Mioplosus. And on the reverse of the plate is the rarest find. There is a partial fossil of a Phareodus, probably about 9" or larger (tail section). This mass mortality plate came from what is known as the "18" layer". In this layer, fossilized fish 'flesh' was found! This is a unique occurrence. Closely examine my enlargements.
