Rare Marlin Model 1893 Lever Action Musket with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1895, this Model 1893 Musket is 1 of only 31 Model 1893s manufactured in the Musket configuration from 1895 to as late as 1915, however records show that only one was manufactured after 1906 (listed as year unknown) according to "Marlin Firearms" by Brophy. Also in Brophy's book on page 588 are the serial numbers, calibers and date of shipment of all 31 including this musket. There is also a breakdown of calibers and number made per year. This musket was manufactured in the first year and in that same year the greatest number 20 of the 31 were made and 22 were manufactured in the 32-40 caliber. All 20 of the muskets manufactured in 1895 were shipped from the company on the same day, December 14, 1895 and were chambered in the 32-40 caliber. (More than likely they were all shipped to the same location). The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address/patent dates and "32-40" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "MODEL/1893" and the serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. Fixed blade front sight and folding ladder carbine rear sight graduated to 900 yards. There is a sling swivel mounted on the underside of the receiver ahead of the lever and one on the front barrel band. Mounted with a full length smooth walnut forearm and a straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the model, Musket configuration, 32/40 caliber, 30 inch barrel and that it was shipped on December 14, 1895.

Very good. The musket retains 20% original blue finish concentrated mainly in protected areas mixed with a smooth mottled brown patina. The buttplate is heavily pitted. The wood is good overall with a couple of minor age cracks on the wrist and overall scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are readable. The action is fine. An extremely rare find and a must have for any Marlin lever action enthusiast.
