Rare Manuscript Document Pertaining to Shay's Rebellion, one page, 7.5" x 9", Massachusetts, May 1, 1787. A militia quartermaster's "Pay Roll for Simon Edgell for services in the Government Army employed by Colo. John Gleason in the late rebellion at the west part of this State". This is one soldier's timesheet for the month of February 1787. Toned, with smoothed folds, very good condition.
Freed of colonial shackles, Americans were quick to test authority during the late 18th century. Commencing on August 29, 1786 Revolutionary War veteran and hero Daniel P. Shays led an all-out armed revolt against tax collectors in western Massachusetts. Beaten down by the Boston establishment, Shays was eventually pardoned by none other than John Hancock. The 'rebellion', however, has been credited as an influencing factor in the creation of the United States Constitution to define the powers of the federal government.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
