Colorado Penitentiary made German silver overlaid curb bit stamped with prisoner No. 20344 and Deaf Mute inside the cheek. According to Patrice Maul and Jack Ferguson’s Colorado Prison Spurs, this was the maker-mark of E.H. McKinney who served 161/2 years in Canon City prison from 1938-1954 for the assault and attempted rape of two young school teachers. The account of the incident leading up to McKinney’s incarceration is well detailed in the Maul & Ferguson book for those who care to read further. The bit is in fine overall condition, attached to a leather headstall.
