<td width="100%">
This is an antique French Majolica jug in the likeness of the Duke of Wellington. The modeling, painting, and glaze on this jug are masterfully done; the face has a great expression! The first holder of the title of 1st Duke of Wellington was Arthur Wellesley, (1769?1852), the noted Irish-born British career officer and statesman, and unqualified references to the Duke of Wellington almost always refer to him. He is most famous for defeating Napoleon at Waterloo. (At first, it was thought this was Admiral Horatio Nelson, one of the greatest naval heroes in the history of the United Kingdom. An English admiral famous for his participation in the Napoleonic Wars, Nelson lost his life in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.) Dimensions (in inches): 6.5 H X 5.5 D X 4.5 W. Weight: 14.6 Oz. The date is late 19th Century circa 1890 or earlier. Condition: The underside base and rim foot are glazed with glaze losses on the rim foot (see photos). Additionally, there is fretting and four 1/8 inch or so chips to the top rim, a ¼ inch chip to the outside of the spout that has been over painted in yellow, and fretting to the ears and epaulets. The condition is fair to good; there have been no apparent repairs or restorations. Sold as is as described. Shipping and Insurance by USPS Priority Mail within the U.S. is $15.00. Thanks for your interest, and happy bidding!
