Emily Carr painter of British Columbia forests and West Coast Indian Villages, was born in Victoria , 1871 and died there in 1945. Her most mature work is characterized by the combination of intense personal feeling with a keen observation of actual qualities of her subject. This early painting of totem poles was executed shortly after a stay in Paris, and in its broken broken colour and light tonality shows her familiarity with French Impressionsists. It also shows Emily Carr more as a the external observer than as the deeply personal interpreter, though even here there is a bigness of feeling expressing an awareness of the underlying drama of her theme.
